Saylor Kate: A Birth Story

I have been trying to find the time to put together my birth story but life has been a whirlwind lately. So without further ado, here it goes, the story of Saylor Kate's entrance into the world...

It all started on the Tuesday before her birth so, September 27th, around 9:00 pm. We were having dinner with our friends, and I began to have these pretty intense contractions (surges in hypno-birthing world) in my back, when I couldn't sit to eat anymore we decided to head to the hospital and get checked out. I was so nervous that I wouldn't make it to the hospital with this birth because Max had come to quickly,  I felt like we had to go in at any chance of labor. Cody and Lacey were champs and took Max for us until my dad could get there. We got to the hospital around 9:45 pm, they checked me, I wasn't effaced at all, and I was only dilated to a one, I was having consistent contractions every 4 minutes though. When I had heard this, I immediately wanted to go home. Natural births and laboring entirely at the hospital is a total drag, having someone hook you up to monitors every 30 minutes is torutre at that point. The hospital however, wanted me to stay for at least an hour, so I obliged. After an hour I had gone from a 1 to a 3 so, of course, they had me stay. Well from there it was hours of nothing! Just an awful night with zero sleep. Finally at around 5:00 am I asked to be released and they sent us home.

From there the entire week my dad and Mike made sure I had someone with me, 24/7. Literally if Mike had to leave for work at 8:30 am, my dad was there by 8:15. I was feeling like a giant inconvenience, and possibly a little like a prisoner. I kept telling them, I would be fine; I don't need someone with me at all times! Worst case scenario, I put Max in the car, drive myself to the hospital and they can meet me there. Well, God really has a sense of humor because they sure proved me wrong...totally wrong.

On Saturday, October 1st, we were given some amazing tickets to see Luke Bryan and we figured, why not, let's go! Who knows maybe another concert will help get her out, we thought. So we went, we had a blast, scared the people we sat next to with my giant pregnant belly, came home, went to bed and then I woke up around 6:00 am in... Full. Blown. Labor. The concert had worked...again! Apparently my babies like concerts to help them cruise through the birth canal. I wasn't sure at first because I was having Braxton Hicks all week and didn't want to deal with another false labor, so I just sat in bed and timed them. I remember waking Mike up to tell him I am having consistent contractions but they are still pretty far apart. Well, within 30-45 minutes they went from 9 min apart to 6 min apart, so I woke him up and told him to call my dad. I decided to jump in and take a cold shower because I wanted to rinse off but didn't want my labor to progress faster than it already was. It didn't work. The contractions went from 6 minutes apart to 2 minutes apart within the time it took me to shower! I mean, seriously?! I remember getting out and just having to be on my hands and knees because I wasn't able to walk well by that point.

By the time my dad was able to get to us it was around 8:15 am, and we were loading up ready to go. I remember my dad telling us we should bring a blanket or a towel just in case we didn't make it,  and I snapped back saying, we don't have time for that we have to go now! Honestly, thank goodness we were driving a dealership car because with that mess, I think I would have just lit my car on fire if that would have happened. Off we went, driving way over the speed limit trying to make it. We were still a good 10 minutes away when I told Mike, I needed to push... I could see the panic in his eyes and watched the speedometer go up to 110 mph. He ran every red light and we finally made it. God was seriously watching over us because if it had been any other day besides Sunday, we would have hit traffic and I would have been that woman on the news who gave birth on the side of the road. By that point I was just trying to do my hypno-breathing techniques because it was all happening too fast to do an actual hypno-birthing session. When we got to the hospital there was no one at the front desk of Labor and Delivery and Mike was in total panic mode, banging on the door, yelling for them. I grabbed him and told him to stand there and let me hold on to his neck so I could have support for my contractions, because at that point there was nothing we could do. And let's be honest, I was just grateful we were actually at the hospital and not on the side of the freeway. Finally, they let us in and the lady asks, "So, what's going on?", uh.... I am in labor and I need to push! From there is was crazy town. They threw me in a wheelchair hauled me off to a room where I stripped down, crawled on the bed and one of nurses was able to get an IV lock in me in under 30 seconds. Talk about impressive. My nurses were AMAZING, and everyone was ready to go in what seemed like seconds, probably because it was. Then in walks in my OBGYN, who just happened to be the doctor on call that morning. Talk about God watching over us again! I started to push pretty much immediately and out she came in about 3 pushes, or 10 minutes after we walked through the front door. We tease that she came in, "like a wrecking ball", and we like to sing her that song now. Hahaha. But for real, I know she is definitely my baby, she had no patience for labor, when she was ready to come she wasn't about to wait around.

Saylor was perfect. They gave her to me immediately and we were able to have what they call "The Golden Hour" with her. It's essentially, where they give you uninterrupted time with your baby for an hour before they take them away and do all their measurements. It was lovely. We didn't have that with Max, and it was so nice! She had a strange sounding cry which they called, strider, it made her sound like she was gasping for air when she would cry. So, we had to keep an eye on that and stay in the hospital for the full time. Thankfully it turned out to be nothing, she was perfect. But I will say, it was nice to have the bonding time with her, get nursing down, and relax before going home to take on two kids! Hello, Migliorini part of four! Talk about scary! It did take us two days to name her, but I feel like we made the right choice.

The last 3 months have really been a blur, and each day that goes by it is harder to remember what life was like before Saylor joined our family. She fits in perfectly, like she has been with us forever. We adore her, and Max is a wonderful big brother. We truly are blessed.
